Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has disclosed that a uterine fibroid condition first diagnosed in 2014 has returned and is now significantly more severe.
Speaking on Today, she revealed that doctors recently informed her she has more than 50 fibroids, with the largest reportedly the size of an orange. According to her, the primary options presented were either undergoing invasive surgery or continuing to live with persistent pain.
Nyong’o said she previously had 23 fibroids surgically removed in 2014. The latest diagnosis, she noted, came as a shock and has heightened concerns about her reproductive health.
She explained that she is not currently ready to undergo another myomectomy — a surgical procedure that removes fibroids while preserving the uterus — citing the invasiveness of the operation and associated risks.
Beyond sharing her personal experience, Nyong’o has turned her focus to advocacy. She is raising funds to support research into less invasive and non-invasive treatment options and is collaborating with organisations dedicated to uterine health to promote greater awareness and improved care.
The actress said speaking publicly about her condition has helped her overcome feelings of shame and connect with other women facing similar challenges.
Medical experts note that uterine fibroids are common and can cause symptoms such as heavy bleeding, prolonged menstrual periods, pelvic pain and other complications. Treatment decisions often depend on factors including the size and location of the fibroids, severity of symptoms and a patient’s fertility goals.
Nyong’o’s disclosure has renewed attention on the need for expanded research and clearer treatment pathways for those living with fibroids. She has called for more open conversations and stronger scientific investment to ensure patients have access to safer and more effective options without stigma.
