A security analyst, Dr. Ishmael Norman, has called on the Mahama administration to explore alternative oil sources due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, Dr. Norman warned that the ongoing tensions between Israel, the US, and Iran could disrupt global oil supplies, impacting Ghana’s energy security.
He suggested considering suppliers like Dangote in Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea and utilising the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) for local refining. “We should prepare ourselves as a nation when it comes to oil consumption. We should find different sources – Dangote, Equatorial Guinea are there. We can buy the crude from there. TOR is now in a position to do a bit of the refining for us,” he said.
The conflict has already disrupted global shipping lanes, raising concerns about oil market stability. Dr. Norman emphasized proactive planning to avoid energy shortages and inflation.
