Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced a 48-hour shutdown of the Barekese Water Treatment Plant to undertake critical repair works on a key transmission pipeline, a move expected to temporarily disrupt water supply across Kumasi and several surrounding communities.
In a statement issued on Friday, June 5, 2026, the company said the maintenance exercise will take place from Tuesday, June 9, to Thursday, June 11, 2026.
According to GWL, a team of engineers and technical personnel will carry out emergency repairs on the main transmission pipeline at the Barekese headworks following the detection of structural defects that require immediate attention.
To facilitate the operation, water production at the treatment plant will be suspended from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11.
The shutdown is expected to affect water supply to households, businesses, industries, and public institutions throughout the Kumasi Metropolitan Area and adjoining municipalities.
GWL explained that the maintenance work is necessary to protect the integrity of the transmission infrastructure and prevent more serious disruptions in the future.
“The repair works are critical to safeguard the integrity of the transmission pipeline and ensure its continuous and reliable operation,” the statement noted.
The company has advised residents, property managers, and business operators to store sufficient water ahead of the scheduled shutdown to reduce the impact of the temporary interruption.
While apologising for the inconvenience, GWL assured customers that normal water production and distribution would resume immediately after the repair works are completed.
The utility provider further indicated that its regional teams would remain engaged with the public throughout the exercise and encouraged customers to monitor its official communication channels and local media platforms for updates on the progress of the repairs.
