The Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has stated that the government will not embark on broad renegotiations of public sector service terms in 2026.
Addressing delegates at the 2026 Annual Labour Conference in Ho, Volta Region, the Vice President noted that although there has been some improvement in public sector pay, the current salary structure has been under heavy pressure for years.
She said that, as a stopgap step, government will roll out focused and limited increases to specific allowances while wider reforms to the national pay system are concluded.
She indicated that the short-term move is meant to create the needed budgetary and administrative room for the new remuneration structure to take effect.
“The creation of the Independent Emolument Commission is a targeted step to resolve the matter. It enables government to bring stability to the pay system and entrench sound institutional practices, while maintaining stability and labour peace.“Government has also indicated that 2026 will not be a year for sweeping renegotiation of service conditions across the public sector.
“Instead, focused and modest upgrades to selected allowances will be introduced as an interim step while the core reforms to our emoluments system are finalised,” she stated.
