The Member of Parliament (MP) for Talensi, Daniel Dung Mahama, has reassured farmers that the government was taking concrete measures to alleviate the current food glut affecting maize and rice farmers nationwide.
This came as the Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana warned that the grain sector was on the brink of collapse, with over 100,000 metric tonnes of unsold produce from the 2024 harvest.
Farmers in various regions are struggling to find reliable markets for their produce. Appearing on Channel One TV’s Newsroom, which was monitored by Ghanaianradar.com, Mr. Mahama urged farmers to remain calm, citing government efforts to address the issue.
“Farmers shouldn’t panic. They should utilise traditional storage methods. The government is on top of the situation, and the National Food Buffer Stock Company has been tasked to purchase the surplus,” he said.
The MP advised farmers to adopt better post-harvest practices to minimize losses while the government explores new market opportunities. He welcomed the Minority’s call for the Minister for Food and Agriculture to brief Parliament on plans to manage the surplus, describing it as a sensible move to ensure transparency. Meanwhile, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga revealed that Cabinet has approved funds for the National Food Buffer Stock Company to buy excess maize and rice, stabilizing the market and protecting farmers’ interests.
