The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has expressed regret following criticism over remarks implying that assignments to northern Ghana might be seen as a penalty.
In a release from the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), the minister said the comments, recorded in a viral video, were an “inadvertent misstatement” and did not represent her personal position or the official rules for public service transfers.
“My attention has been drawn to a widely circulated video in which I made remarks suggesting that postings to the northern part of our beloved country could be considered as a form of punishment,” she stated.
“I wish to state, without reservation, that the comments captured in the video were a genuine slip in communication and do not reflect my considered views.
”The minister clarified that the statements came during a response to a media inquiry about claims that some officials involved in improper development permit approvals are often reassigned to nearby areas, enabling the behaviour to persist. She noted that while answering, she mentioned cases where civil servants had been transferred to locations far from their usual residence, but admitted her wording gave the wrong impression.
“Regrettably, my choice of words created the unintended impression that such postings were punitive,” she said. Mrs. Ocloo issued what she called a full apology to the public, especially to residents of Ghana’s northern areas.
“I sincerely acknowledge the concerns that this has generated and offer my unreserved apology to all Ghanaians, especially my brothers and sisters in the northern regions, for any misunderstanding, offence, or discomfort caused,” she stated.
The minister also restated her dedication to impartiality, professionalism, and proper procedure in government administration. She assured citizens that all administrative actions, including staff assignments and transfers, would continue to follow official guidelines strictly.
Mrs. Ocloo further asked the public to regard the issue as resolved, reaffirming her pledge to serve Greater Accra’s residents with integrity and fairness.
