The Ministry of Health has taken a major step to strengthen cardiovascular care with the introduction of updated treatment guidelines and the deployment of medical equipment valued at over GH¢6 million.
The intervention, delivered in partnership with AYA and its collaborators under the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative, is aimed at improving the prevention, diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases across the country.
At a launch ceremony, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, unveiled revised national protocols for cardiovascular disease management, alongside new training manuals and implementation booklets for Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) facilities.
He said the initiative would strengthen frontline healthcare systems and support the government’s Free Primary Healthcare policy by promoting early detection and effective management of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
The equipment package—comprising ECG machines, defibrillators, glucometers and blood pressure monitors—will be distributed to 179 health facilities across seven regions to enhance service delivery.
Representing the Country Director of GIZ, Mr. Wilhelm Hugo, emphasised the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing non-communicable diseases and reaffirmed continued support for Ghana’s health sector.
The Ministry says the intervention is part of broader reforms to improve healthcare quality and build a resilient system capable of responding to the country’s growing disease burden.
