Renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama is meeting the Police Management Board as investigations continue into allegations that he was assaulted by police officers earlier this month.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on March 21, is alleged to involve members of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, commonly referred to as the “Black Maria.”
However, the unit’s commander, Abdul Bawa Jalil, has denied any involvement, maintaining that his officers were not part of the incident.
The case has since been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau, the internal body responsible for probing misconduct within the Ghana Police Service.
As part of efforts to ensure a thorough investigation, the Inspector-General of Police has invited both Mr Mahama and the Northern Regional Police Commander to Accra to provide statements and assist with the inquiry.
The engagement with the Police Management Board is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the allegations and determine whether any misconduct occurred.
The case has attracted significant public attention, with calls for a transparent and impartial investigation given the prominence of the artist and the seriousness of the claims.
Police authorities have assured the public that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
