President John Dramani Mahama has announced that authorities were wrapping up arrangements to pay people hit by the Akosombo Dam flood.
Speaking on Thursday, July 16, during his Resetting Ghana visit to the Volta Region, he promised the exercise would be carried out in a just manner so that those impacted get the right assistance.
In the 2025 financial plan, government set aside GH¢225 million to help victims of the 2023 incident that led to large-scale destruction and forced many people out of their homes in sections of the Volta Region.
The President noted that if the current amount is not enough, more money will be added in the next budget to keep supporting the affected households.
“The people of this region have endured a lot lately,” he said. “The discharge from both the Akosombo and Kpong dams brought serious difficulties to many families. It damaged houses, farmlands, businesses and sources of income in several communities. Government has stayed focused on managing the effects of that disaster.”
“Checks, evaluations and all the paperwork needed for the pay-outs are nearly done. I want to assure everyone affected that we are determined to finish the process in a fair, open and responsible way. Once that is complete, the Finance Minister will include funding in this year’s budget to begin disbursing the compensation.”
