The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Latifa Salifu, the woman accused of stealing a four-day-old baby at the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra, has been formally charged, with the case adjourned to March 4, 2026.
According to police, the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue ahead of her next court appearance.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, February 24, the Dansoman Divisional Police Commander, Abraham Apusyine, said the accused is being held to assist investigators in completing all aspects of the case.
“She is in custody to assist us in concluding all aspects of the investigation, and then she will reappear before the court on the 4th of March. For now, other aspects of the investigation are ongoing, and she is in safe custody until that date,” he stated.
Also addressing journalists, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, confirmed that the suspect is expected to return to court as legal proceedings progress to ensure justice for the affected family.
She further disclosed that the rescued baby is responding well to medical care and is expected to be discharged later on Tuesday. Psychological support, she added, will also be provided to the parents following the traumatic incident.
The 33-year-old trader was earlier remanded into custody on February 20, 2026, by the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) Court in Accra after being charged with one count of child stealing. The court, presided over by K. K. Obiri Yeboah, did not take her plea because investigations were still ongoing.
The prosecution, led by Opoku Aniagyei, informed the court that inquiries had not been completed and requested that the accused be remanded in custody pending further investigations.
