The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), Mrs Justina Nelson, has encouraged female leaders in finance to harness determination, discipline, and creativity to turn challenges into lasting value for their organisations and the nation.
She emphasised that tough times should galvanise leaders rather than weaken them, fostering courageous and principled leadership.
Speaking at the inaugural Women in Finance Summit in Accra, themed “Turning Obstacles into Gold: Unlocking Resilience and Leadership in Finance,” Mrs Nelson stressed that resilience is a critical leadership trait, especially during uncertain times.
Addressing senior executives and emerging leaders, she shared her experience as MIIF CEO, navigating changes to the Fund’s Act and a new government administration. “These could have been seen as obstacles, but leaders who stay focused under pressure make better decisions and inspire confidence,” she said. Mrs Nelson, credited with transforming MIIF, noted that overcoming challenges requires a mindset shift, mental toughness, and viewing setbacks as opportunities for growth.
With 23 years of banking experience, including 19 years in senior roles at Zenith Bank, Mrs Nelson emphasized that leadership is about stewardship, particularly when managing public resources. She highlighted MIIF’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and sustainability in its investment decisions, and noted that recent reforms have driven growth and profitability.
Mrs Nelson urged leaders to prioritise sustainability, equity, and community impact, asking, “How do our decisions today create a better tomorrow?” She encouraged women in finance to lead with courage, integrity, and purpose, building institutions that promote inclusive growth and lasting prosperity. The summit brought together stakeholders to celebrate women in leadership and explore strategies for resilience and inclusive finance.
