The leader of the National Democratic Congress Action Movement, James Agbey, has cautioned party leadership and government officials against imposing candidates as the party prepares for a leadership transition beyond John Dramani Mahama.
In a statement issued on March 21, Mr. Agbey called for an end to what he described as growing factionalism within the National Democratic Congress, warning that internal divisions could undermine the party’s democratic credentials.
He noted rising tensions among competing groups, with different camps already mobilising and positioning themselves ahead of the party’s presidential primaries. According to him, the contest is shaping up to be highly competitive and potentially divisive.
While commending President Mahama for pledging not to interfere in the selection of his successor, Mr. Agbey expressed concern that the actions of some party and government officials could still influence the process unfairly.
He stressed that no aspirant should be disadvantaged through the misuse of state or party structures, insisting that all candidates must be given equal opportunity.
“To achieve true internal party democracy, party leaders, government officials and public agencies must appear neutral,” he said, adding that the party must demonstrate its commitment to fairness in practice.
Mr. Agbey also urged party members and delegates to uphold transparency and integrity, describing them as key to safeguarding a credible electoral process.
He called on all factions to unite and avoid internal conflict, warning that lingering divisions could weaken the party ahead of the 2028 general elections. He further pointed to lessons from the New Patriotic Party, arguing that internal disputes and alleged imposition of candidates contributed to setbacks in the 2024 polls.
According to him, the NDC must lead by example as a democratic and progressive party, ensuring that its next generation of leaders reflects its core values.
He concluded that while the current administration continues to address key national concerns, including the cost of living, the party’s future will depend on unity, fairness, and a transparent leadership transition process.
