The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security during the upcoming parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North. Joshua Alabi, Greater Accra Regional Director of Elections for the NDC, expressed confidence in the Electoral Commission (EC) and security agencies’ preparedness to conduct a smooth election in the 19 affected polling stations.
Alabi noted that although security lapses occurred during the previous elections, the EC and security agencies have since improved their systems. He highlighted measures such as personalized tags for voters, which will help prevent irregularities. “I believe they have done their homework, and with the few I have seen on the ground, I don’t think we’ll experience the lapses we had last time,” Alabi stated.
The NDC’s assurance comes after public concerns over potential security issues, following disruptions to the collation process in the 2024 general elections. However, Alabi is optimistic that the rerun will be incident-free, given the security presence and the limited scope of the election, covering only 19 polling stations.
In related news, the Accra High Court has dismissed an injunction application filed by Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, which sought to halt the rerun. The NDC has pledged to approach the election with fairness, integrity, and a commitment to democratic principles.
