Newmont Clarifies Occupational Health Compensation for Medically Unfit Employees

Newmont Corporation has responded to recent media reports concerning the compensation of employees declared medically unfit at its Ahafo operations, stating they created a “false impression of unfair treatment.”

In a statement, the mining giant clarified that a new Collective Agreement (CA) signed in the first quarter of 2025 with the Standing Negotiation Committee establishes a revised benefits structure for such workers.

Under this agreement, the statement stressed that unionised employees declared unfit for work on occupational grounds are entitled to 36 months of basic pay plus 18 months of free medical treatment through a company-funded scheme after their departure.

Newmont emphasized that this package is separate from and in addition to the legally mandated compensation required by Ghana’s Workmen’s Compensation Act.

The company stated that the purpose of the combined benefits is to ensure long-term financial security, comprehensive medical care, and protection against unexpected costs for affected employees.

Addressing reports of unequal treatment, where some employees reportedly received 60 months’ pay, Newmont explained that all employees declared medically unfit after the new CA came into effect are bound by its terms from that effective date. The company noted that it conducted extensive engagements with employees prior to implementing the changes.

Newmont is the world’s leading gold company with operations spanning several continents, including its significant presence in Ghana.
