The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Savannah Region has called on the Ghana Police Service to immediately arrest and prosecute Fuseini Sorku, popularly known as “Fuzzy”, over the alleged assault of social media activist Yussif Abdul-Hakim in Tamale.
At a joint press conference in Damongo, regional and constituency executives of the party condemned the alleged attack and expressed concern over what they described as rising political violence.
Savannah Regional Secretary Issah Mohammed alleged that Mr Sorku travelled from Damongo to Tamale and attacked Abdul-Hakim at his residence on June 6, 2026, following a social media post critical of government performance.
According to the NPP, the victim has since reported the matter to the police and received medical treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. The party accused the police of delaying action and urged law enforcement authorities to swiftly arrest and prosecute the suspect.
Mr Mohammed said the alleged attack was part of a broader pattern of intimidation aimed at silencing opposing political views, warning that such acts threaten peace and security in the region.
He also called on the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to condemn political violence and ensure supporters refrain from acts that could undermine democratic freedoms.
Police Respond
Meanwhile, a senior source at the Savannah Regional Police Command has rejected claims that the police are delaying action in the case.
According to the source, the command received a request from the Northern Regional Police Command to arrest Mr Sorku over the alleged assault. However, before officers could effect the arrest, some NPP supporters allegedly attacked the suspect’s residence and damaged property.
The police said those involved were arrested and subsequently arraigned before the Damongo Circuit Court on charges including unlawful entry, causing damage and assault.
The source further disclosed that Mr Sorku is currently on the run but assured that efforts are underway to locate and arrest him for transfer to Tamale to assist with investigations.
Attempts to reach Mr Sorku for comment were unsuccessful, while investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
