The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has provided clarity on the circumstances surrounding the arrest of private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, at its premises.
According to OSP Director of Strategy, Communication, and Research, Sammy Darko, Mr. Kpebu’s arrest was unrelated to his allegations against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, but rather stemmed from his behaviour towards security personnel at the facility.
The OSP alleges that Mr. Kpebu was obstructive and disrespectful at the entrance of the compound, despite warnings from security officers. He is said to have become aggressive and insulted officers when reminded that photography and videography were prohibited within the premises. This behaviour was consistent with previous encounters, officials say.
Mr. Kpebu was arrested for obstructing personnel performing their lawful duties, and was later granted bail under standard administrative procedures. The OSP denies claims of mistreatment, stating that the arrest was conducted without force and that all protocols were followed.
The office has rejected allegations of setting a trap, insisting that the arrest was a straightforward enforcement of the law in response to misconduct on its premises. “No one is above the law, regardless of connections or public influence,” the OSP said, adding that similar behaviour would likely result in arrest at other security agencies.
The OSP maintains that it acted lawfully and professionally throughout the process, with mr. Kpebu’s lawyers allegedly creating a scene after his arrest. The incident has sparked debate, with some questioning the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
