The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Executive Secretary, Duncan Amoah, has warned that Ghana has not escaped its electricity troubles despite government claims that Akosombo Dam operations are fully restored.
His remarks follow recent bouts of unstable power supply in several areas, which authorities blamed on transformer upgrades and a blaze at a Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) control room near the Akosombo Dam that took one generating unit offline.
In his May Day speech, John Dramani Mahama declared that all six units at the dam were back online and running at maximum capacity, a step expected to steady nationwide supply.
Yet, appearing on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, 2 May, 2026, which was monitored by the Ghanaian Radar, Mr. Amoah said Ghana’s energy sector problems extend beyond restoring Akosombo’s output.
“When you leave the politicians to tell you what they did and what they didn’t do, you will be forced to believe that we are out of the woods, but the truth is we are not,” he said.
He argued that Ghana’s frequent outages stem from outdated systems across the power transmission and distribution network.
“If you have a system that has been functioning from 1957 till now, and you don’t make a conscious effort to upgrade it, any time there is rain or wind, and you have the pylons touching each other or falling down, you will have communities being affected,” he stated. “I think it is an infrastructure issue,” Mr. Amoah added.
