Russia has increased the number of scholarships available to Ghanaian students from 120 to 240 annually following high-level engagements between the two countries.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the development during his ongoing official visit to Russia, saying the expanded scholarship programme will provide more Ghanaian students with opportunities to pursue fully funded studies in critical fields.

In a post on Facebook, Mr Ablakwa said the scholarships will prioritise programmes in artificial intelligence (AI), engineering, petroleum sciences and pharmaceuticals.

He said the expansion forms part of broader efforts to deepen cooperation between Ghana and Russia in areas considered strategic to Ghana’s economic and technological development.

Cooperation on nuclear energy

Mr Ablakwa also disclosed that Ghana and Russia have agreed to strengthen cooperation on Ghana’s peaceful nuclear energy programme.

The partnership is expected to support Ghana’s efforts to diversify its energy mix as the country works towards incorporating 700 megawatts of nuclear power into its electricity generation capacity.

The two countries will also advance cooperation on Ghana’s green transition objectives, with energy and climate-related initiatives forming part of the broader discussions.

Collaboration on global issues

According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Ghana and Russia also agreed to deepen cooperation on key international issues, including counterterrorism, climate change and reform of the United Nations.

He described the agreements as significant progress in Ghana-Russia relations, particularly in the areas of education, energy, climate action and international diplomacy.

The expanded scholarship programme is expected to increase access for Ghanaian students seeking specialised training in fields such as AI, engineering, petroleum and pharmaceutical sciences, while the broader agreements could strengthen bilateral cooperation in strategic sectors.
