The Wassa Amenfi Municipal Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says around 100 houses in Samreboi have been totally destroyed after the latest floods.
A further 20 buildings sustained partial damage, making wide parts of the town unfit to live in as clean-up work goes on. NADMO noted that while most of the water has now drained away, the level of damage to structures and the threat of contamination mean people cannot move back yet.
Speaking to journalists, the Deputy Municipal NADMO Director, Christopher Bevel, said close to 1,900 people have been impacted and are still without shelter.
“We have about 100 buildings that are totally collapsed with 20 partially collapsed. For the population which was affected by the flood, it is about 1,900 for now. Although the floodwaters have receded, the houses are currently not safe for habitation,” he said.
The disaster was triggered by intense rains that pushed the Samre and Tano rivers over their banks, causing extensive destruction and forcing residents out of their homes.
