President John Dramani Mahama has reassured cocoa farmers that his government is committed to transforming the sector to deliver fairer and more sustainable benefits. Speaking during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday, February 27, he acknowledged concerns over the recent reduction in cocoa prices, describing the decision as difficult but necessary.
“The recent reduction in the price of cocoa was not an easy decision,” he said. “But it was necessary to safeguard the sector rather than borrowing billions to pay prices we cannot sustain.”
President Mahama explained that maintaining higher producer prices through heavy borrowing would have deepened financial pressures and risked destabilising the economy.
Structural Reforms for Growth
The President assured farmers that structural reforms are underway to boost productivity, enhance value addition, and ensure that cocoa producers receive stable and fair returns.
“The government remains committed to supporting farmers and ensuring that the cocoa sector thrives sustainably, providing both stability and prosperity for our hardworking cocoa communities,” he added, stressing that the reforms aim to create a resilient sector capable of long-term growth without excessive debt.
