The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has ordered members engaging in activities suggestive of parliamentary campaigning to immediately stop, warning that violators could face disciplinary action and severe sanctions.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Monday, September 14, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.
According to the NDC, the decision follows “extensive deliberations” by its Functional Executive Committee (FEC) over activities involving members believed to have parliamentary ambitions in various constituencies.
The party has cautioned members against organising or participating in meetings, tours, donations, public appearances and other engagements intended, or reasonably perceived, to promote a potential parliamentary candidature before nominations are officially opened.
“The Party considers such premature activities inappropriate and potentially disruptive to its unity, cohesion and orderly functioning,” the statement said.
The NDC warned that members who disregard the directive would be dealt with in accordance with the party’s Constitution, rules and regulations.
“Any member who disregards this directive shall be subject to disciplinary action and severe sanctions in accordance with the Party’s Constitution, rules and regulations,” it said.
Regional, constituency, branch and other party executives have also been instructed to ensure compliance with the directive and report violations to the appropriate party authorities.
“All Regional, constituency, branch, and other party officers are directed to ensure compliance and report any breaches to the appropriate Party authorities,” the statement added.
The NDC said the measure is intended to protect the integrity of its internal processes and ensure an orderly selection of parliamentary candidates.
“The NDC remains committed to a transparent, orderly and credible process for selecting its parliamentary candidates,” the party said.
It added that the date for the opening of nominations, together with the relevant rules and guidelines, would be formally announced at the appropriate time.
Until then, members have been urged to refrain from premature campaigning and adhere to the party’s established procedures.
“All members are urged to respect the Party’s established processes and remain disciplined in the interest of Party unity,” the statement concluded.
