The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has assured the public that recent electricity disruptions affecting parts of the country will be resolved by the end of the week, following emergency interventions triggered by a fire at a key power installation in Akosombo.
The outages stem from a blaze that caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure at a substation operated by the Ghana Grid Company, resulting in widespread instability in power supply to homes and businesses.
Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, April 27, the Director of Communications at the Ministry, Richmond Rockson, confirmed that the fire destroyed essential components of the facility, including its main control room.
“The whole control room has to be rebuilt, and that will take a number of months,” he said. “What will restore power to normalcy immediately is a temporary measure to bypass the control room.”
He explained that engineers are currently deploying a temporary bypass system to restore electricity supply in the short term while reconstruction works proceed.
“The engineers have assured us that within the week, or at the latest by the close of the week, supply should return to normal,” he stated.
Mr Rockson further disclosed that limited generation has resumed at the Akosombo Dam, with one of its six turbines currently operational to support stabilisation efforts.
The disruptions have affected economic activity and daily life across several communities, heightening public concern over the reliability of electricity supply and renewing fears of prolonged outages.
Energy sector authorities say emergency measures are being implemented to mitigate immediate challenges, while long-term restoration of the damaged infrastructure continues. Although full reconstruction of the control room is expected to take several months, officials maintain that the temporary bypass system should help stabilise supply in the interim.
The Ministry’s assurance comes amid growing public pressure for a swift resolution, as engineers continue round-the-clock efforts to restore full stability to the national grid.
