The Member of Parliament for Tema Central, Charles Forson, has called on the Ghana Union of Traders Association and other trading groups to reconsider their ongoing strike action and prioritise dialogue.
Speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM on Tuesday, 14 April, Mr Forson urged the associations to take into account the impact of their actions on the general public and consider a temporary suspension of the strike.
He acknowledged that the right to strike is legitimate but emphasised that its consequences for ordinary citizens must not be overlooked.
According to him, industrial actions of this nature can disrupt economic activity and exacerbate the already challenging living conditions faced by many Ghanaians.
Mr Forson further noted that his position is informed by national interest rather than political considerations, stressing that he would not support actions that undermine the country’s welfare, regardless of his position in opposition.
He therefore encouraged GUTA and other stakeholders to engage with the appropriate authorities in order to find a sustainable resolution to the issues at hand.
He also appealed to the association to “put a human face” on its actions by considering the broader implications of the strike on businesses and daily livelihoods.
“Put a human face to the strike and end it because strikes in any form affect the economy and the standard of living of people,” he stated.
