The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has successfully carried out four additional kidney transplant procedures, increasing its total number of successful transplants to 15 and marking another major milestone in Ghana’s organ transplant programme.
In a post shared on X, the medical centre announced that the latest surgeries bring the total number of kidney transplants performed at the facility since its first successful procedure in June 2024 to 15.
The achievement underscores the growing capacity of Ghanaian health professionals to undertake complex, life-saving medical interventions locally. It also represents a significant step forward for the country’s specialist healthcare sector, which has historically seen many patients travel abroad at considerable cost to access kidney transplant services.
UGMC’s expanding transplant programme is expected to strengthen public confidence in Ghana’s healthcare system and support efforts to position the facility as a leading centre for advanced medical care in both Ghana and the wider West African sub-region.
Kidney transplantation is widely regarded as one of the most effective treatment options for patients with end-stage kidney disease, offering better long-term health outcomes and an improved quality of life compared to long-term dialysis.
While the medical centre has not disclosed details about the latest transplant recipients, it confirmed that all four procedures were successful. The latest accomplishment further reflects ongoing efforts to expand access to specialised healthcare services and advanced medical treatments within the country.
