President John Dramani Mahama has underscored that the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results give a true picture of pupils’ performance after government clamped down on examination malpractice.
He was speaking on Saturday, September 12, during a citizens’ engagement at the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) in the Upper West Region as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour.
According to the President, tighter invigilation has stopped the mass cheating that previously allowed some candidates to get help in the examination hall.
He said performance had improved in several subjects, including Mathematics and Social Studies, though there was a slight drop in one subject which is being investigated. He said the new measures are now revealing the actual preparedness of students.
“One thing that I’m happy and proud of is that we’re seeing our children’s true results,” President Mahama said.
He accused some headteachers and officials of previously colluding to assist candidates, leading to grades that did not reflect their true abilities.
He noted that this practice allowed students to move to higher levels without the required foundational knowledge.
“And so today we’re seeing the real results of our children because invigilation has improved and the mass cheating in exams you know has been curtailed,” he stated. The President insisted that students must earn their grades through genuine learning.
