Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Paul Afoko, has called on party members, executives and patrons to put past disagreements behind them and concentrate on rebuilding the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking during separate meetings with Regional Executives, Councils of Elders and Patrons in the Western North, Ahafo, Bono and Bono East regions as part of his nationwide consultative tour, Mr Afoko stressed the importance of unity, grassroots mobilisation and forward-looking leadership.
“We must build bridges to the future, not the past,” Afoko told party faithful. “If we keep looking backwards, we will miss the opportunities in front of us. The youth in this party, and a great number of us, don’t want stories about who offended whom in the past or during 2024. They want the party they believed in back in power. Focus on unity and grassroots organising.”
The engagements focused on strengthening the party’s grassroots structures, rebuilding confidence among members and encouraging greater participation by young people.
Mr Afoko urged party supporters to avoid actions and rhetoric that could reopen old wounds, arguing that internal conflicts would only undermine the party’s efforts to regain power.
During the meetings, he highlighted his “3R” agenda — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture — which he described as a roadmap for restoring cohesion within the party and positioning it for future electoral success.
“For years I chose to work quietly behind the scenes, supporting the NPP in private,” he said. “But recent developments have compelled me to step forward. We need to get our party back into winning ways, and that starts with unity of purpose.”
According to the former chairman, the period leading up to the next election presents a crucial test of whether the party can rise above its internal challenges and embrace a more mature and progressive political culture.
Despite acknowledging existing divisions, Mr Afoko expressed confidence that party members would unite around a common goal and work together to make Mahamudu Bawumia the next President of Ghana.
“The future will not wait for us to finish fighting the past,” he said. “Let’s build the bridges now.”
The nationwide tour forms part of Mr Afoko’s broader outreach campaign aimed at reconnecting with the NPP’s grassroots base and promoting a message of unity, development and inclusion as the party prepares for the next electoral cycle.
