At least seven persons have lost their lives after an illegal mining pit caved in at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.

Four others remain buried underground, with rescue teams racing against time to save them after the disaster struck on Saturday night, August 29, 2026.

The incident happened around 11:00 pm when the miners were said to be digging for gold.Sources told journalists that two miners who were outside the pit when it collapsed dashed to the community for assistance.

Community members quickly organised themselves and contacted the Police and emergency services. After hours of rescue efforts through the night, the lifeless bodies of seven out of the eleven trapped miners were pulled from the rubble.

Five of the dead have been identified as natives of Moseaso, with the other two believed to be from Asaman Tamfoe.Officers from the Anyinam District Police Command, Ghana National Ambulance Service, NADMO and local volunteers are still at the scene working to locate the remaining four victims trapped in the pit.
