The Ministry of the Interior, together with the Ghana Police Service, on Thursday, June 4, extended GH¢15,000 each to households hit by the blaze at the Accra Central Police barracks, in a move to reduce the short-term financial strain on survivors.
The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, announced the relief package during Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s inspection tour on Friday, June 5, where they reviewed the destruction left by the inferno.
He noted that the funds were meant to help the affected households cover pressing needs such as clothing and essentials following the tragedy. He indicated that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) also released GH¢120,000 to bolster the recovery initiative, partnering with the Interior Ministry and the Police Service to strengthen the support.
“…We were able to extend together with the police about GH₵15,000 to each family for them to be able to buy some clothes. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly also gave GH₵120,000 to the police to further support,” he said.
He further stated that disbursement of the assistance followed a needs-based formula to guarantee equitable sharing of the money among the impacted households. The fire, which broke out on the night of June 3, razed structures at the Accra Central Market, triggering joint emergency responses from state institutions and the security agencies.
