Ghana and Colombia have signed a landmark agreement to establish direct maritime connectivity between Tema and Cartagena ports, boosting Africa-Latin America trade.
The agreement, announced by Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, was signed in Bogotá on March 23, 2026, after successful talks.
The new route aims to facilitate smoother trade flows, enhance logistics, and create new opportunities for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
The initiative has received strong backing from Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Elena Márquez Mina, whose role was described as instrumental in championing the partnership.
Ghana also expressed appreciation to Colombia’s Foreign Minister, Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, for her leadership and commitment in securing the deal.Officials highlighted the symbolic significance of the agreement, noting that the Atlantic corridor—once associated with the transatlantic slave trade—is now being repositioned as a pathway for economic cooperation, job creation and shared prosperity.
The agreement is expected to deepen Ghana-Colombia relations while opening new avenues for trade and investment across Africa and Latin America
