The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a security advisory urging members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa to exercise heightened vigilance ahead of planned demonstrations centred on immigration concerns.
The warning follows circulating reports and viral footage indicating incidents of xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in parts of the country. In a statement released on Tuesday, 28 April, the mission advised citizens—particularly those residing in Pretoria—to prioritise their personal safety.
The advisory comes amid plans by a group identified as the March Organisation to march to the Presidency to present its grievances.
Speaking through the statement, the High Commissioner, Benjamin Anani Quashie, urged nationals to remain alert during the period. Ghanaian business owners were specifically encouraged to suspend operations for the day and avoid locations where demonstrations are expected.
The mission further cautioned against participation in public gatherings that could escalate into confrontations. Nationals were also advised to maintain a low profile and exercise discretion both in physical spaces and on digital platforms, including refraining from sharing content that could be perceived as provocative or inflammatory.
The High Commission indicated that it will continue to monitor developments and provide further updates as the situation evolves.
