The Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) has made the difficult decision to cancel its plans to host the 2026 African Swimming Championships. The event, which was scheduled to take place from May 5 to 10, 2026, in Accra, will no longer be held in Ghana, following unresolved governance challenges and insufficient institutional support.
The Ghana Swimming Association had initially secured the rights to host the prestigious event in April 2025 during a meeting in Cairo, only to face significant hurdles in its preparation process. The main reason for the withdrawal, according to the GSA, is the ongoing internal electoral disputes that have interfered with the progress of the event’s preparations.
In a statement, the Association revealed that its efforts to organize the competition had been “significantly undermined” due to the National Sports Authority’s (NSA) persistent pressure to adopt guidelines that contradict the GSA’s constitution. Despite trying to engage with various stakeholders and make necessary adjustments, the GSA highlighted that the NSA’s actions further delayed the creation of essential organizing committees for the event.
“The refusal to cooperate and the sequence of events that followed made it clear that Ghana could not meet the required standards to host such an important continental event,” the GSA’s statement explained.
