Government has announced plans to compensate persons affected by the recent demolition exercise at La Pleasure Beach in Accra.
The disclosure was made by the Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon and Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, when she appeared before Parliament’s Local Government and Rural Development Committee.
According to her, data on all affected individuals has already been collected to aid the compensation process.
She added that a special committee to decide on the nature and extent of the package will be inaugurated by early next week.
She explained that although the exact form of compensation is yet to be finalised, affected persons are assured of being duly catered for.
She stressed that as the local MP, she was closely monitoring the process to ensure everyone receives what is due them, and that Parliament’s Committee will be briefed once a decision is reached.
The exercise, which saw the pulling down of several facilities along the La coastal stretch, including La Pleasure Beach and Polo Beach Club close to the Labadi Beach Hotel, was carried out by personnel of the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces with support from the Ghana Police Service.
Operators and traders in the enclave were ordered to vacate before the demolition.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the La Dadekotopon Constituency has expressed shock over the development, stating that initial checks had suggested the area was not earmarked for any demolition by the Labadi Beach Hotel.
