The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by Monday’s heavy rains in Accra, describing the resulting floods as a “self-inflicted” disaster that could have been prevented.
In a strongly worded statement issued after the June 29, 2026, downpour, the party criticised successive governments for failing to tackle persistent challenges such as indiscriminate construction on waterways and the dumping of refuse into drainage systems.
According to the CPP, what should have been a blessing for agriculture has instead become a national tragedy, claiming lives and destroying property worth millions of cedis, with forecasts indicating that more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
The party called on the government to immediately deploy the Ghana Navy, all available speedboats and the Blue Water Guards to support rescue operations and protect lives and property in flood-affected communities.
“The Government of Ghana owes it as an emergency duty to swiftly do this,” the statement said.
The CPP also urged the Minister for Energy, John Jinapor, to direct the immediate disconnection of electricity in all flooded areas where water has reached electrical poles and installations to minimise the risk of electrocution.
It further called for a coordinated, “all-hands-on-deck” response involving the security services, emergency agencies and technical experts to effectively manage the crisis.
The party also appealed to Ghanaians to remain calm, stay vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas while authorities continue rescue and recovery efforts.
The CPP concluded by praying for the safety of all citizens and expressing solidarity with victims affected by the floods.
